Virtual model clothing can be a more sustainable alternative to traditional fashion workflows, but not because the photoshoot was the big problem. Where the waste actually is
The State of AI Fashion 2026 report puts the share of samples discarded at roughly 60 percent, and cutting rounds from four to two halves physical material used in development. The discard rate is industry data with no named source in the report, so treat it as directional.
How many sample rounds brands run today
In the same survey (n=250), one brand in twenty gets a style approved in a single round. 35 percent need two to three rounds, 45 percent need four to five and 15 percent need six or more, so 60 percent run four or more. Rounds were counted as reported, not observed. That is the room a digital workflow has to cut.
Counting avoided units
The Machine-Readable Brand counts environmental progress in units that never existed. In the authors' illustration for 250 styles, sample rounds fall from 875 to 288, about 587 avoided. Overproduced units fall by 15 to 25 percent of trend volume, and returns fall from 25 to 18 percent, about 7,000 fewer two-way shipments. These ranges are illustrative.

What a render cannot replace
A render settles visual confidence: whether the silhouette matches the brief, whether the collection holds together and which colorway advances. It cannot settle production confidence: armhole and wearing ease, seam balance and grade, fabric stretch and recovery, and whether the garment can be cut and sewn. The image has no pattern under it. So the honest claim is fewer sample rounds, not zero.
The limits to state plainly
Accuracy does not excuse poor materials. Rebound is real: cheaper imagery and faster drops can raise total volume. On-demand production is not automatically green if it ships by air freight. A sustainability claim should name what was avoided and how it was counted.
